Fresh strings make any guitar sound better. They ring brighter, stay in tune better, and feel smoother under your fingers. At TuneUp Guitar in Redding we change strings on just about anything with strings, quickly and affordably.
Why have strings changed for you?
Plenty of players change their own strings, and that’s great. But a lot of folks would rather not, or have instruments that are a hassle to restring:
- 12-string guitars
- Classical guitars with tie-on bridges
- Floyd Rose and other locking tremolos
- Banjos and mandolins with tailpieces
- Basses with string-through bodies
We also clean the fretboard and wipe down the guitar while the strings are off, which is the easiest time to do it.
What’s included
- Old strings removed
- Quick wipe down of the fretboard and body
- New strings installed with proper winds on the tuning posts
- Strings stretched so they settle in fast
- Tuned to pitch in your preferred tuning
- A quick look at action and intonation so we can let you know if anything needs attention
Strings: yours or ours
The price covers labor. Bring your own strings, or we can supply a set for an extra charge. If you’re not sure what to use, we’ll suggest a set based on your guitar and how you play.
Signs your strings are worn out
- They look dull or discolored
- They feel rough or gritty
- The tone is flat and dead
- The guitar won’t stay in tune
- Notes up the neck sound out of tune even after tuning
When a string change isn’t enough
If your guitar is still hard to play or buzzes after new strings, it probably needs a full guitar setup. A setup includes new strings plus truss rod, action, and intonation work. For basses, see bass setup.
While the strings are off is also a great time for fretboard cleaning and conditioning.
Bring it in
Drop your instruments off at the shop on Redcliff Drive in Redding. Got several guitars to restring? Bring them in together. Music stores, pawn shops, and owners of large collections can ask about on-site service.
Guitar String Change questions
How often should I change my strings?
It depends on how much you play. Regular players often change every month or two. If your strings look dull, feel gritty, or won't stay in tune, they're due.
Can I bring my own strings?
Yes. Bring your favorite brand and gauge and we'll install them. The price covers labor, and strings are extra if you need us to supply them.
Will changing string gauge affect my guitar?
It can. Heavier or lighter strings change neck tension, which can affect action and intonation. If you're switching gauges, a setup is a good idea.
