If your guitar feels hard to play, buzzes, or won’t stay in tune, it probably needs a setup. A setup is the single best thing you can do for how a guitar plays, and it’s one of the most affordable fixes we do at TuneUp Guitar in Redding.
What’s included in a setup
- New strings, installed and stretched so they hold tune
- Truss rod adjustment for the right amount of neck relief
- Action adjustment at the bridge and a check of the nut slots
- Intonation set at every string so chords sound in tune up the neck
- Pickup height check on electric guitars
- Tuners, strap buttons, and hardware tightened
- Fretboard cleaning and conditioning
- A quick electronics check: pots, switch, and output jack
Signs your guitar needs a setup
- The strings feel high and hard to press down
- Strings buzz on certain frets
- Chords sound out of tune higher up the neck even when the open strings are in tune
- You changed string gauge or tuning
- The guitar just came out of storage, a hot car, or a cold garage
Setups for every style
We set up guitars for how you actually play. Low and fast for lead playing, a little higher for heavy strummers or slide, and dialed in for alternate tunings. Tell us what you like and what bugs you about the guitar now, and we’ll set it up to match.
Bring it in

Guitar Setup questions
How often should I get my guitar set up?
Once or twice a year for most players. Redding's hot, dry summers and wet winters move necks around, so a setup at the change of seasons keeps things playing right.
How long does a setup take?
Most setups are done in a day or two.
Do you use my strings or yours?
Either. A fresh set of strings is included in the setup price, or bring your favorite brand and gauge and we'll use those.
